FAQs

Why does a watch need regular servicing?

Like every machine that runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, a watch needs maintenance. The small amount of oil needed to lubricate the bearings of the movement gets used up. This can lead to reduced accuracy or even stop a movement. Also the crown can get damaged by hits and the little rubber seals that guarantee the tightness of the watch dry up over time, letting dust and humidity enter the movement. A total overhaul of a movement is called for approx. every 6 years.

What is included in a complete service of a watch?

A complete service consists of the following:

Water-resistance forever?

The water-resistance is guaranteed by several seals but cannot be considered as permanent protection. They are subject to a natural ageing process and need to be replaced after a certain time of use. However, under certain circumstances, the integrity of the moisture resistance may become compromised within a shorter period of time. Furthermore, impacts to the crown can influence the water-resistance as well. A perfect long-term protection is given by annual water-resistance tests. We recommend to have your watch tested annually by one of our Rado authorized Service Centers, especially before summer holidays.

How long should a battery last?

Approx. 2 years, depending on the condition of the movement. We recommend to go to an authorized Rado dealer or an official Service Center to get the battery changed since only they have the proper tools and can perform all the necessary tests.

How hard are the Rado materials?

The case and bracelet of most Rado watches are manufactured from materials that reach a hardness of 8.5 or more on the Mohs scale (Diamond = 10). This results in scratchproofness. However, scratchproof does not mean indestructible. Therefore, heavy hits or dropping the watch need to be avoided at all cost. When dropped on a hard surface a case or a bracelet may break.

What are the characteristics of sapphire crystal?

Sapphire crystal is extremely hard and almost can't be scratched. It can only be damaged by hits when the watch is dropped or by contact with materials that are even harder, like diamond, corund (marble), metal alloys, metal carbides, quartz or similar. Remember that grinding stones, sand paper, nail files and similar utensils quite often contain these very materials.

New Warranty Plan From RADO

Rado customers receive additional benefits with an extended warranty period. The Rado management decided to introduce a 24 months' warranty period for all Rado watches sold worldwide, starting from January 1, 2002.

All terms and conditions of this extended 24 months' of warranty remain unchanged as in the past for the one-year warranty.

This two years' warranty is granted irrespective of the text in your international guarantee booklet, which might mention only a one-year warranty.

The warranty only comes into force if the warranty certificate is dated, fully and correctly completed and stamped by an official Rado dealer.
